The bill amends Articles 10 and 11 of the Citizenship Law: reacquisition would remain possible only for the persons who themselves lost Romanian citizenship. It contains no provision protecting files already filed. The previous amendment, Law no. 14/2025, was applied to files filed before it entered into force. For files whose statutory period has expired, Romanian law provides a path: the court can order ANC to decide your request. Check your file today and find out how to protect it while the current law is in force.

Write your file number (the RD number) and, if you know it, the registration date on WhatsApp. No other document is needed.
We look up your file in the public lists of the National Authority for Citizenship (cetatenie.just.ro): registered, scheduled for the Commission, or decided (order issued).
Within 24 hours you receive the current status, how files registered on the same day as yours are doing, and, depending on the stage, the options the law gives you.
When your application reaches ANC, it receives a registration number (for example 1234/RD/2021). Everything is tracked by this number.
The Citizenship Commission examines the file. If documents are missing, a request for completion is issued. This is the longest stage.
After the Commission's report, the President of ANC issues the order. After a favourable order, the procedure ends with the oath of allegiance, which can be taken at the Romanian embassy or consulate in your country of residence.
The law sets a statutory period of 2 years from registration for a decision, with an exceptional extension of up to 6 months. In practice, waits of 3–4 years are common, and files registered in 2019 are still waiting. If your file has passed the statutory period, we also explain the options you have.
After the statutory period expires, the authority has no date left to respect: the order of processing is not chronological, and petitions receive a standard reply. Romanian law (Law no. 554/2004 on administrative litigation) provides one path that gives a file a date: an action before the Bucharest Tribunal, which finds that the statutory period has expired and orders ANC to decide your request within a fixed term, as a rule 30 days from the final judgment, under penalty of a daily fine for the head of the authority.
The court does not examine the file and does not grant citizenship; it obliges the authority to decide. The judgment is usually obtained in about six months, at a single hearing, which we attend, not you. The contract is concluded remotely, without a notarial power of attorney, and you receive the court file number immediately after filing, which you can verify yourself on the public portal of the Romanian courts. A judgment obtained while today's law is in force fixes the legal framework of your request; a later law cannot deprive it of effect.
